Tea Time at the Neighbour: Thermodynamic Laws, Microbiota and Weight Loss
Summer is the perfect time to build a healthy body image. Corona-days limit our visits to less outdoors and more to our living room, bedroom. We all are at risk of becoming heavier and out of shape.
Last week, I visited a friend in the neighborhood to say goodbye, as I will be moving soon. She kindly invited two of use to her house. To be honest, when women gather, I found myself struggling with a discussion topic. What will be the highlight of today? I was lucky this time as my friends were chatty enough, and I found myself 3–4 hours of the flow of feminine energy.
The main topic was: how did we gain weight in the last two months?
My mind started to wonder:
Our body is a closed system. If you are eating the same but gaining weight, it means an increase in the stored energy. There must be a decrease in energy expenditure. Because the first rule of thermodynamics is:
Conservation of energy: It works for the systems but not at the quantum level. “Our body is a closed system. So our body energy can not be created or destroyed. “
When the topic goes on, we discussed how exercise could help with weight loss.
It reminded me of the second law of thermodynamics:
Entropy is the tendency of the system to be more disorganized. Our body wants to be disordered, lose shape.
That explains why we tend to gain weight, lose shape without any energy transfer! Let’s use the third law to help my friends losing weight.
A woman’s body goal is to have the most ordered state :) We need to decrease the entropy to lose weight, which requires energy transfer. Energy transfer means the production of waste energy as well that we call heat. The unit of eating is calories. Producing heat means transferring calories outside of our bodies, so If I am sweating in any activity, including suntanning.
After my visit, I kept thinking about the phenomena of gaining weight without any changes in energy transfers in a closed system, our body. How can it be possible?
I saw this article that it is possible because, at the quantum level, we know that thermodynamic rules are hard to apply. Miscogiuri, G et al. published in 2019 at the International Journal of Obesity Supplements, `Gut microbiota: a new path to treat obesity.` It was a review article summarizing previous evidence on how gut microbiota affects energy harvesting and fat storage.
Scientists showed that:
“Obesity is associated with the gut microbiota in reduced diversity, which in turn reduces the metabolic energy consumption in comparison with that of the microbiota of lean people.”
Guess what, if you eat a Mediterranean diet over two years, this can normalize gut microbiota actions, reduce insulin resistance (in other words, protects diabetes) and heart attacks.
So this is the summary for healthy body image:
- Produce heat: This shows that you are expanding energy and decreasing the entropy in your body.
- Develop a healthy gut microbiota: Studies showed following the Mediterranean diet helps to this regulate energy harvesting and decreases fat storage.
